‚Just supposin‘ from Status Quo started it all, it was the first album i got when i was 8 years old. It made a lasting impression on me for sure, i assume i must have been one of the biggest Quo Fans around at the time. Later on i discovered all the other bands like Deep Purple, Scorpions, Krokus, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Kiss etc. I started playing the trumpet with 8 years and it wasn’t until i was of 14 years, that i would switch to the guitar, when i heard Yngwie Malmsteen’s ‚Trilogy‘ Album for the first time. My world changed in this very minute and I knew I had to finally get started playing that tremendously fascinating instrument. First i had to convince my dad to get me one, and he eventually gave me the money to buy one. But before that he asked me to play a melody which was on the radio, if i could play it to him he would give me the money. I played it to him instantly on an old beat up acoustic that was lying around for a while, and we had a done deal, off i went and got me my first electric guitar, it was an Aria Pro II Flying V, i still have it.
After that I formed my first band in school, with which i played my first gigs and did my first demo recording when i was 17. I started to take lessons at the Jazz School and went to GIT in Los Angeles later on. Around that time I met ukrainian piano virtuoso Vitalij Kuprij for the first time when he was playing in a small bar in my hometown in switzerland. Things changed soon after that, when we formed Alantis Rising in 1992 and recorded 2 instrumental demos, of which the second one eventually led to our first recording contract with Mike Varney’s label Shrapnel Records. To say I was excited is a understatement, a dream of mine came true in this very moment. We renamed Atlantis Rising to Artension, the lineup for the debut album consisted of Vitalij Kuprij, John West,Mike Terrana, Kevin Chown, and myself and has been recorded and mixed at ‚Prarie Sun‘ Studios in Cotati and 'Sound Temple' Studio in Oakland, California (as were all of our first 4 Albums).
Artension’s debut album ‘Into the Eye of the Storm’ was well received and had a major impact when released worldwide via Shrapnel /Roadrunner Records in 1996, as we were gaining a solid following throughout the World. The follow up ‚Phoenix Rising‘ was released one year later, and is considered a classic album in this genre, which i am proud of. It got re-released in 2011 via King Records Japan in a remastered version. After Phoenix Rising we released, ‚Forces of Nature‘, ‚Machine‘, ‚Sacred Pathways‘, ‚New Discovery‘ and ‘Future World’ in 2004, marking the end for Artension. There were and are talks in doing another album, which i hope will eventually happen, we will have to see i guess…
After Artension, I moved on with my new band Angel of Eden, the album ‚The End of Never‘ was released 2006 in Japan through Marquee/Avalon and Lion Music in Europe. We received great reviews, and the feedback was very positive, encouraging for sure. This album was my opportunity to have more control over the musical direction, I also loved producing it.
As we continued, we renamed to Artlantica and the album ‘Across the Seven Seas’ for which i was also the producer of, was released in 2013 worldwide via SPV/Steamhammer. I had John West on vocals, Mistheria (keys) and John Macaluso (drums) completing the lineup. Guest players include Steve DiGiorgio (Bass), Dani Löble (Drums) and Chris Caffery (Guitars). The Album was getting incredible reviews all over the world. I think for sure that this album so far has been the best work of mine, i am still very proud of it.
Recently i kept busy working on Mistheria’s new instrumental album 'Gemini’, which will be released in 2017, i did guest contributions on the two Signum Regis Albums 'Through the Storm' and 'Chapter IV: The Reckoning'. I also guested on the DSG Album 'Still a Warrior' (Dave Shankle) featuring myself besides Michael Angelo Batio, Joe Stump and Parker Lundgren from Queensryche. I also had the pleasure and honor to be part of the All Star, Mistheria led Vivaldi Metal Project ‘The four seasons’ Album and did one track on the upcoming Vitalij Kuprij Solo Album, a release i look very much forward to. As for the moment i am busy working on the new Artlantica Album, the songs come along great,so i am looking very much forward to completing that one along the way.
I was featured several times in Young Guitar and Guitar Magazine in Japan, as well as in numerous other magazines such as Burrn!, Fuzz Magazine etc. I have been blessed to work with a lot of outstanding musicians during my recording career, here’s a list of some musicians I had and still have the honour and pleasure to work with so far:
